The Missouri Sales Tax Free Weekend will be held on August 1st-3rd, 2014. You will not be charged state sales tax (4.225%) on any qualifying purchase, regardless of city. Each city and county decides whether or not they will assess sales tax on those purchases. Unfortunately, it looks like many cities and counties have decided to opt out this year. Specific districts are also eligible to opt out, such as Prewitt’s Point in Lake Ozark.
The sales tax exemption is limited to:
- Clothing – any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
- School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase
- Computer software – taxable value of $350 or less
- Personal computers – not to exceed $3,500
- Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $3,500

Be sure to check the excluded cities, counties, and districts before heading out. You’ll want to check all three lists!

I’m honestly not a huge fan of shopping during the tax free weekends. Most cities near me are not participating, and it seems that the sales are lackluster. When paired with the excessive crowds, it just isn’t worth it to me to save 4.225% and often costs much more than simply paying the sales tax and shopping another day.
